Undisrupted - Haze II: Gadgets
Written by Kang Yi Hun and Cayden Ng
It was 24 October, the second 集合 we had that was disrupted by the haze. Due to the haze’s critical condition in the previous week, our 集合 on 17 October unfortunately had to be cancelled. Although the haze situation did improve, our scout activities still had to be held indoors. This time, our venue was the dungeon and the canteen instead of the hall on 10 October. Fortunately for us, this means that transporting logistics to our activity venue was much easier.
For this 集合, we did gadget building. But, that is not the whole picture. We were also looking out for scouts with leadership skills and potential. With the year end approaching, the next promising batch of scouts would succeed their L3 seniors in time to come. Thus, it is important to assess every scout’s ability right now.
The scouts were given much freedom with their gadget building, even given the chance to design their own gadgets. This gives our scouts many opportunities to demonstrate their leadership capabilities. To increase the challenge, the ventures threw in different conditions throughout the building session. This includes tying the hands of 2 patrol members together, tasking the Patrol Leaders with building a different gadget and so on. From these, we can pull out some patrol members and let others take over, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to lead. Overall, the scouts were successful in building their gadgets and fulfilled most of the criterias given to them.
However, 集合 was not over yet. After keeping the bamboo and rafia used for gadget building, the scouts had another activity - skits. With the theme of the skit being ‘Mount Ophir Expedition’, the scouts got together in their patrols to tap on each other’s creativity to come up with interesting performances. It is fair to say that through this skit, the scouts bonded with their patrol and had their fun, ending this 集合 on a high. May our scouts continue to have unwavering determination and motivation in scouting!
